about

In this piece, Normal Community High School Experimental Ensemble explores the auditory field of negative $13 million. Between ongoing chatter and instrumental conversations, the piece indulges in a present that cannot be re-lived unless it is democratically protected from certain dismaying budget cuts. The music mimics the school day with bells sectioning-off the movement of sounds one might never hear again. Whether that be because high school is not long-lived or because the sounds used, such as playing instruments and whirring shop-class machines, might not survive the vote of April 4th, 2023, the group leaves to the listener’s imagination.

...

Budget Cuts was originally composed to be an audio installation in the art exhibition, Uplifting Voices, organized and curated by Myra Saulat, on display at The Coffeehouse in Normal, IL, March, 2023.

Thanks to the amazing people and sounds of Normal Community High School.

Also thanks to the people in our community who are too ignorant to understand the importance of properly funding public education. Your ignorance inspired Budget Cuts.

Here's to a world where education is truly liberating and freely available and accessible to all.
